Software Department team in Goleta, Santa Barbara County, CA is seeking a highly motivated, experienced Senior Engineer, Software Engineering to be part of a collaborative, mission-focused environment where your leadership and technical insight will have a clear and meaningful impact.
What You Will Do:
As a Software Engineering Section Leader, you will play a pivotal role in guiding a multi-program software portfolio that directly supports critical customer objectives.
- This position offers the opportunity to lead and develop high-performing engineering teams, influence technical direction across a major product family, and contribute to both program execution and long-term strategic growth.
- Provide first-line leadership and oversight for software engineering personnel to meet program and organizational objectives.
- Lead and mentor a diverse team of Software Engineers across all experience levels and all phases of the software development lifecycle.
- Collaborate with program leadership and technical architects to ensure program objectives, product family goals, and engineering standards are consistently achieved.
- Manage execution across multiple programs, coordinating team efforts, maintaining a shared Agile backlog, and ensuring timely communication with program leadership and customers.
- Support functional management responsibilities, including hiring, staffing, resource planning, technical guidance, career development, adherence to engineering processes, productivity improvement, and risk mitigation.
- Contribute to proposal development, including creating cost estimates informed by historical metrics and program data.
- Work onsite in Goleta, CA, with some business travel required.
Qualifications You Must Have:
- Typically requires a Bachelor's in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
- Experience with programming languages such as C/C++.
- Prior leadership or management experience.
- Experience with tools such as Atlassian toolsets, Jira, Docker, Coverity, or similar.
- Experience in embedded software, signal processing, DevSecOps, or in open architecture environments.
- Active and transferable U.S. government issued Secret security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Strong technical foundation that supports effective engineering judgment and leadership decisions.
- Prior experience as an Agile Product Owner supporting multiple programs or a scrum-of-scrums environment.
- Functional leadership experience, guiding performance, offering constructive performance reviews, mentoring and motivating team members, and contributing to effective hiring decisions.
- Broad understanding of software architecture principles.
- Experience with Agile development methodologies.
- Experience developing software bid estimates.

The salary range for this role is 145,600 USD - 276,800 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement.
Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.
This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
