The Centre for Information Policy Leadership (CIPL) at Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP is a leading global privacy and data policy think and do tank working at the intersection of law, policy and technology, with a membership comprising more than 85 multinational companies across a broad range of industry sectors. Since being founded in 2001, we have served as a trusted partner of business leaders, regulators and policymakers developing best practices, thought leadership and solutions for privacy, data and digital policy, law, and compliance. CIPL: INFORMS via publications, member events and public fora; CONNECTS global industry and government leaders; SHAPES the future of data policy and strategy; and CREATES innovative solutions and elevates best practices. CIPLs leadership and staff are globally recognized data privacy thought leaders. They include former senior public and private sector professionals with extensive global and national experience in developing, interpreting, implementing, and enforcing laws, policies, and corporate privacy programs relevant to the data economy. CIPL is looking for a Director of Data, AI and Privacy Policy to join our team in our Washington, DC, or London office. About the Role: The primary purpose of the Director of Data, AI and Privacy Policy is to advance CIPLs policy priorities and initiatives in the US in relation to a wide range of AI, privacy, and data related law, policy, implementation and compliance topics, including the US law and policy development process. In addition, the Director of Data, AI and Privacy Policy will also work on international AI, data and privacy projects with CIPLs global team of privacy experts based in London and Brussels. Key Responsibilities Include: Hands on drafting and overseeing of CIPL research and deliverables white papers, reports, op-eds, and other written deliverables. Working closely with CIPL team members to develop strategies, oversee and implement project plans to advance CIPLs US and global policy agenda on AI, data, and privacy topics. (This includes the following topics: proposed legislation; cross border data flows; digital sovereignty and data localization; accountability-based information management, AI, data and privacy governance; regional developments (e.g., US (state and federal), Canada, Latin America and Asia-Pacific); the role of the corporate data protection or privacy officer; privacy risk management; transparency and user control; privacy enhancing technologies (PETs); cloud computing; and data sharing between and among private sector organizations and public sector organizations; childrens privacy and safety, and regulatory strategy and oversight). Leading CIPLs work on the US privacy law and policy development process at the federal and state levels and engaging with relevant lawmakers, staff and legislative committees to advance CIPLs policy positions. Helping position CIPL as a policy thought leader by staying abreast of US and global public policy developments in data, AI, privacy and related areas, by anticipating relevant emerging issues and developing CIPLs policy positions. Deepen relationships and exchanges with current CIPL members and help recruit new CIPL members and project participants. Seeking opportunities for and helping manage collaboration with CIPL member companies, think tanks, academics, industry groups and policy influencers to advance CIPLs policy agenda. Developing agendas and content for CIPL and non-CIPL events and speaking/representing CIPL at these events. Assisting with special projects and consulting assignments relevant to CIPLs mission and CIPL members. Management responsibilities to oversee, develop and grow CIPL team and skillsets across geographies. Required Minimum Qualifications: Advanced degree (J.D., Ph.D., or Masters) in law, public policy, or a related field. Minimum of 8+ years of relevant professional experience (e.g., industry, professional services, law firms, think tanks, trade associations, government, regulatory agencies, or legislative roles). Deep knowledge of global data protection, AI, privacy, and related laws, policies, and regulatory frameworks, including emerging technologies. Strong understanding of U.S. federal and state legislative and regulatory processes, with a demonstrated track record of engagement with policymakers and stakeholders. Proven ability to conduct and lead research on emerging AI, data, and privacy issues, including regulatory developments, policy trends, and organizational best practices. Exceptional writing, analytical, and public speaking skills, with experience drafting public consultation responses, white papers, and thought leadership articles. Ability to distill complex concepts into clear, persuasive communications. Solid understanding of data-driven innovation, technology trends, and/or foundational computer science concepts. Strong business judgment and understanding of the global corporate environment, including practical experience with data protection compliance and privacy management programs. Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills, with an entrepreneurial mindset, proactive approach, and ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Additional Interests, Experience or Qualifications: Understanding of technology trends, computer science and/or data analytics. Competition law, intellectual property law, and/or regulatory compliance. Knowledge of additional languages is a plus. Other Qualifications: Availability and willingness to work hours as needed to meet critical deadlines. Strong commitment to client service excellence and teamwork. Must possess the highest standards of ethical conduct and professionalism. Must act as catalyst for change, drive and own results. Creative and innovative. Willingness to work across time zones and across cultures. Frequent travel may be required. Excellent communication skills (oral, written and listening) and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse group of professionals. Sound judgment and flexibility. Ability to work well under pressure, patience, diplomacy, high stress tolerance, excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to prioritize workload and adapt to changing conditions. Frequent travel may be required. Visual acuity needed to process and read extensive written communications. Ability to receive and convey detailed information through oral communication. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications. Essential competency processes include language ability, reasoning and memory. To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must possess the abilities or aptitudes to proficiently perform each of the responsibilities and accountabilities described above, with or without reasonable accommodation. The expected salary range for Washington, DC based employees is $170,000-$230,000, though salaries for employees based outside of Washington, DC may differ. Beyond an employment candidate's physical location, salary offers may be based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, training and/or experience.
