Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, an international law firm, is actively recruiting a Sr. Paralegal in our Miami office. This position assist lawyers and non-attorney timekeepers with preparation of complex legal documents, mid-level legal research activities and other tasks related to the firm's legal practice area. Provides leadership in supporting firm, office and team initiatives and in support of management directives.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Generates revenue by meeting billable hour and other timekeeping expectations set forth by the firm. Proactively secures billable work, which may require working across teams and offices. Maintains current and accurate daily time log; inputs time records into firm's time and accounting systems according to firm and outside counsel guidelines. Accounts for complete workday.
2. Comprehensive knowledge and application of Federal, State, and Local Rules. Stays abreast of current rules changes and informs team of same.
3. Identifies appropriate laws, judicial decisions, legal articles, and other materials that are relevant to assigned cases, business transactions or regulatory matters. Analyzes and organizes the information, prepares written reports that lawyers use in determining how cases, business transactions, or regulatory matters should be handled. Assists with preparation of legal documents in draft and final form; assists lawyers during trials, meetings with clients, closings, and regulatory hearings.
4. Files and/or e-files documents with various governmental or other entities, as requested; adheres to firm's e-discovery guidelines and protocols.
5. Analyzes complex legal documents and/or summarizes legal documents and depositions and, if applicable, participates in depositions and manages witness folders for same.
6. Performs complex factual and legal research efficiently; utilizes LEXIS, Westlaw, WestKM and other electronic research databases; demonstrates advanced understanding of regulatory, administrative, and/or court service requirements to complete routine legal filings, E-Filing, and/or communications with representatives of the court, tribunal, agency, etc.
7. Manages documents and prepares for discovery and trial, hearing, transactional event, and/or closing, as applicable and as directed by a lawyer. Coordinates with the various administrative departments for resources needed to support legal practice, i.e., Office Services, Cognicion LLC, and other applicable support services. Communicates with outside vendors for services related to same. Coordinates with appropriate internal personnel regarding contracts, pricing, supplies, and equipment. Implements cost containment measures as needed. Maintains solid judgment and analytical skills for good case and transactional management.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred. Paralegal certificate, National Association of Legal Assistants certification or specialty certificate provided by State helpful.
2. Experience: Minimum of seven years of paralegal, or related business experience required; previous experience coordinating paralegal work or supervising case clerks preferred.
3. Licenses, Certification and/or Registrations: Paralegal or other professional certifications relating to one of the firm's legal practice areas and membership in paralegal professional association preferred.
4. Other Minimum Qualifications: Comprehensive knowledge and application of Federal, State, and Local Rules. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and basic technological and research skills necessary to pull requested documents from online resources and familiarity with legal technology and computer databases required. Must have ability to train other paralegals and work efficiently and accurately under pressure, and present a positive, professional image with colleagues, professional staff, and vendors. Ability to work overtime or travel, as needed, on short notice essential. Ability to work well under pressure, patience, diplomacy, high stress tolerance, excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to prioritize workload and adapt to changing conditions. Visual acuity needed for transcription, extensive reading and moderate or advanced keyboard usage. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Ability to receive and convey detailed information through both written and oral communications. Ability to lift, carry, reach, stoop or bend, at times repetitively, for tasks involving filing or movement of files/supplies weighing up to 5-10 pounds. Essential competency processes include language ability, reasoning and memory. Ability to maintain flexibility regarding work assignments to work overtime on short notice required. Ability to work in a cooperative manner as a member of a team.
