As a Sr. Program Manager , you will be a member of the new product development team that supports the design, development, and lifecycle management of innovative products within the Surgical Innovations business.

The Surgical Innovations Operating Unit sets the standard for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) by creating innovative surgical products and services that focus on obesity and diseases and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, abdominal wall, pelvic region, and the head and neck.

This position can reside in Boulder, CO; North Haven, CT; or Minneapolis, MN

A Day in the Life

Medtronic Surgical Innovations is looking for a Sr. Program Manager to lead the evolution of our product development process to simplify work, accelerate product development, and generate best-in-class outcomes from our global product development teams. As a Medtronic Technology Development Center (TDC), Surgical Innovations is building a harmonized and efficient development process that will facilitate our partnerships with other Medtronic Operating Units. The Sr. Program Manager will lead the planning and execution of continuous improvement projects across the New Product Development organization to simplify this cross-OU collaboration. This key PMO leader will also help ensure collaboration across the Surgical Innovations development centers to effectively leverage our broad and diverse engineering talent. The ideal candidate will have continuous improvement and change management expertise with experience in product development.
  • Focused on delivering critical world class technologies related to advanced surgical instruments, lung health products, medical visualization, hernia devices, & wound management.
  • Lead major improvement programs that will evolve how product development is performed across the Operating Unit
  • Plans and deploys change management plans as part of process improvement or transformation
  • Guide the implementation of changes to processes, systems, and practices; Develop or conduct training as needed to facilitate deployment
  • Leads or leverages cross functional teams to evaluate, develop and manage projects for ongoing lifecycle management of products, processes and therapies.
  • Schedule, prepare and facilitate workshops as needed to steer working teams
  • Communicates with stakeholders and obtains stakeholder engagement to ensure the end products or processes will solve the business problems.
  • Leverage a combination of Lean, DMAIC, and DRM practices to efficiently achieve project outcomes
  • Actively lead the development and execution of project plans including schedules, budgets, resources, and anticipated benefits
  • Define project resources and prioritize assignments with leaders.
  • Enable an environment of problem-solving and identify innovative solutions to address competing criteria and create win-win outcomes
  • Provide routine updates on continuous improvement culture and project progress


Must Have: Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

  • Experience managing large teams (directly and indirectly) consisting of both experienced professionals and managers.
  • Is accountable for overall program process, performance, and customer satisfaction.

  • Establishes program objectives, timelines, milestones, and budgets.
  • Develops new policies and procedures that affect program management and product development
  • Program decisions are generally recommended to higher level management.
  • Typically has budget or P&L accountability for one or more programs

  • Problems and issues faced are difficult and undefined, and require detailed information gathering, analysis and investigation to understand the problem.

  • Enhances programs management processes to improve program.

Communication and Influence:
  • Communicates and leads meetings with internal and external customers and vendors, conducts briefings to higher level management team.
  • Influences across functions and businesses while balancing divergent objectives to gain cooperation of other parties on program objectives and execution plans.
  • Communicates with internal and external customers and vendors concerning ongoing operations, programs or processes.

Leadership and Talent Management:
  • Leads, directs and reviews the work of a team of managers, experienced professionals and/or vendors who exercise latitude and independence in their assignments.
  • Establishes daily tasks necessary for successful program execution.
  • Not directly responsible for hire or fire decisions and people management.

Knowledge and Experience:
  • Broad management knowledge and experience to lead project teams in multiple job areas.
  • Typically has mastery level knowledge and skills within a specific technical or professional discipline with broad understanding of other areas within the job function.
  • DRM, Lean Leader, or Six Sigma certification
  • Program Management Qualification: PMP Certification
  • Medical device product development experience
  • Strong track record of leading complex projects requiring strong influence management skills and willingness and ability to institute change
  • Exceptional project management skills; knowledge of process and project planning best practices.
  • Business acumen; ability to think from an overall "best for the business" perspective
  • Able to adapt communication style to varied audiences and stakeholder groups.
