Engineering Sustainment & Quality Assurance is seeking a Principal Design Hardware Quality Engineer to support quality assurance throughout the product design and development phases. This role is crucial in identifying and mitigating potential quality issues early in the development process, ensuring product reliability and compliance with quality standards.
As a technical expert, the successful candidate will collaborate with Engineering, Operations, and Supply Chain to influence design direction, improve quality frameworks, and enhance manufacturability. This position requires technical expertise, management experience, and the ability to drive cross-functional initiatives to improve product quality and reliability.
This is an on-site position with the primary work location in Tucson, AZ, with occasional travel opportunities (3-4 weeks/year) to various Raytheon facilities and/or supplier locations.
This position is an onsite role in Tucson, Arizona.
What You Will Do:
- Oversee the development and execution of quality strategies in collaboration with Engineering, Program Managers, Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), and Functions.
- Leverage engineering experience to evaluate designs and specifications, testing plans, methods, and equipment to ensure product reliability and compliance to quality standards
- Conduct engineering work products reviews, including Peer Reviews, Configuration Control Boards, Drawing Reviews, Design Reviews, Product Readiness, and Sale to identify and eliminate in-phase defects
- Serve as Engineering Hardware Quality Representative on Engineering Review Boards (ERB), Configuration Change Boards (CCB), Risk/Opportunity Management Boards (ROMB), and Material Review Boards (MRB).
- Evaluate design and manufacturing trade-offs to assess potential risks or opportunities
- Perform process walks and use metrics and data evaluation to drive quality improvements to achieve measurable results
- Apply technical design experience to guide root cause analysis, corrective actions, and closed-loop process improvements to enhance quality and reliability.
- Mentor and develop on quality standards, best practices, and defect prevention strategies
- 10% out-of-town travel as required. Local travel to Tucson-based Raytheon facilities as needed.
Qualifications You Must Have:
- Typically requires bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics (STEM) and eight (8) years of relevant experience in the following: - Experience in hardware design, reliability, and manufacturability assessments.
- Demonstrated experience in overseeing root cause evaluation and implementing corrective/preventive actions.
- Experience influencing design direction and implementing quality strategies
- Working experience in Common Product Data Management (cPDM) or equivalent data management repository
- Demonstrated experience using program skills and complying with metrics to drive action and achieve measurable results.
- Management experience and experience engaging senior technical and business stakeholders
- Experience with the product lifecycle, from design through sustainment
 
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued Security Clearance. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Design Engineering experience, with insight into common design problems and potential quality risk areas
- Experience developing and deploying quality frameworks, including Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and AS9145.
- Experience with ISO 9001 and/or AS9100 Quality Management Systems.
- Experience with Risk & Opportunity analysis and Management Boards (ROMB)
- Demonstrated track record of exercising professional decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Certification in Six Sigma, CORE, Shainin Red X, GD&T (ASME GDTP), and/or American Society for Quality (ASQ).
- Versed in DFMA standards and application

The salary range for this role is 101,000 USD - 203,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.
This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
