Description
Job DescriptionMontgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, has an immediate need for a Full-time Planetarium Lab Coordinator in the Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) department. The work schedule is
Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm and occasional weekends. This is a Bargaining, Non-Exempt, Grade 29 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Maintain instructional classrooms, laboratories, and preparation areas; and, ensure proper maintenance, repair, setup, and movement of equipment and instruments to support faculty and student needs.
- Monitor inventory levels, order laboratory supplies, demonstration materials, and replacement equipment as needed.
- Maintain and update the planetarium scheduling system, including internal and external calendars.
- Assist the Planetarium Director in the coordination and execution of planetarium shows, educational programs, and public performances and attend these outreach events as a representative of the College community.
- Take initiative in planning and organizing public outreach events, including programs for significant celestial events (e.g., eclipses, meteor showers).
- Operate and manage the use of telescopes and related astronomical instrumentation for instructional and public events.
- Assist with the development of instructional materials, including written guides, videos, podcasts, or other multimedia content to support educational objectives.
- Collaborate with faculty and peers to stay informed about changes in relevant external certifications or educational standards that may impact course content.
- Support the preparation of the annual operating grant application proposal and related reporting materials.
- Provide technical assistance for instructional demonstrations, including computer troubleshooting, formatting drives, installing operating systems, and configuring peripheral devices such as cameras, audio hardware, and related software.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies and procedures, particularly those related to facilities use and the Protection of Minors.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in physics or astronomy or related science field or the equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
- Five years of laboratory experience including the use of instrumentation and equipment.
- Experience operating a planetarium and public speaking.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Hiring Range: $34.83 to $45.29/hourly. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $55.75/hourly
